Props

Locations

Roles in the group

At the start, there were four of us in the group. However later on, due to creative differences, group member Sam left the group to work on his own. This meant we used the same footage and the same sort of idea, but both have been edited differently and both contain different sounds.

The roles of the group were:

Sam  - Camera man and 'Director'
Ashley - Main actor and was involved in editing
James - Actor and was involved in editing
Jonathan - Actor and was involved in editing

Influences for our film opening

I think the main influence for our film opening was David Fincher's "Se7en". This is because of the murder and mystery that we have included in our film opening. Also the way we have tried to build tension through use of music and lighting, just like in "Se7en"
Another influence for the film was "Let the right one in" due to the way we have made the titles of the film.

Soundtrack

For our film opening title music and music played throughout, we had to find a piece of uncopyrighted music that we could use. Fortunately, I knew of a professional band called Nine Inch Nails that gave away one of their albums for free on their website. As it was free, this meant that we could use it in our project. We chose the instrumental track "Corona Radiata". This is because it gave the opening an eerie and atmospheric feel to it which is exactly what we were looking for.

This is the tracks artwork.

Film opening - rough cut feedback

Once we showed our film openings rough cut to the other groups in the class, we wrote down the comments and feedback we received. Here is some of what the class said:

Good points
- Sounds
- Editing
- Choice of mise en scene
- Interesting camera angles

Weak points
- One out of frame camera shot
- Titles unfinished
- Sounds missing
- One location a bit too dark

After taking into account what the rest of the group said, we used this feedback to change the weak points of our opening to try and increase our marks overall.

Sounds

To make the death scenes in our film opening more dramatic and gruesome, we recorded the sound to them separately using a microphone attached to the camera. The ways in which we created the sounds were very simple and required no money spent on expensive equipment.

Using the iced over snow that we found on our school field we were able to create a stabbing sound for the first death.

For another murder flashback, where a victims neck is snapped, we just used nearby twigs and sticks to create a snapping sound.

To create one of the victims muffled voice we used the little stair case behind our schools stage seen below as it gave an echoed effect.

Before the first flashback we need some water sounds for when the main character is washing his face as it didnt come out very well on the footage, so we just recorded it separately using a sink.

Lastly, we used our school stage to record the footsteps of the main character, this is because the stage gave a good loud and echoed sound when walked on.
